The logistically efficient solution for any Creative Project

“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one” applies more strongly to filmmaking than any other profession. A Production Designer must understand how a space will look through a lens. A Director must understanding staging as well as storytelling (see Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan). Any person in any position on the crew will become better at their craft by understanding how it relates to the other crafts around them. Including all this, any Creative Director needs to effectively understand and orchestrate every step of the process while staying on schedule and within budget.

A true Art Director must not only understand color palette and design, but must also have a firm grasp of storytelling, camera, layout, lighting, rigging, engineering, architecture, scheduling, logistics, research, preparation, budgeting, crew management, perspective, scale, dimension, drafting, staging, research, 3D modeling, pre-visualization, sketching, digital organization, presentation, and workflow.

A true Art Director must have a perfect balance of explosive creative freedom and efficient logistical reasoning.

Stats

With 17 years of experience in the technical world of staged entertainment, and having spent the last ten years in Los Angeles as an Indie Art Director / Production Designer, an IATSE 44 Construction Coordinator and Foreman, and a high school teacher, he has seen it all; from the scraping, scratching, scramble of DIY zero budget short films and children’s theatre, to the unpredictable whirlwind of $140million+ studio features, running crews of 80+ professionals.

Founded on strong backgrounds in theatre, architecture, engineering, and filmmaking, Art Direction comes second nature at this point. From a project’s conception to its completion, every step will be handled and executed effectively and efficiently under his watch.

It all starts with immaculate planning and preparation. From extensive research and quick but clear early concept sketches, to thorough breakdowns, budgets, and look-books.. the foundation and layout of the project is comfortable and strong.

A logistical control of project and crew management, the ability to work with and understand the needs of other departments, having effective communication skills both digitally and interpersonally, and a diversified resume of experience, creates a strong and effective Art Department that is able to quickly and efficiently adapt to the changes, surprises, additions, and mistakes that are inevitably part of every production.

Combine all of that with an innate sense of perspective and three dimensional spatial awareness, effective utilization of Sketchup, CAD, VectorWorks, ProCreate, scale modeling, pencil sketching, Excel, Keynote, Powerpoint, Numbers, pre-visualization in storyboards and Adobe Creative, combined with Industry leading abilities in Set Construction, fabrication, design, and engineering, and once again being able to quickly adapt, adjust, and create on the fly… and the execution of projects has a controlled efficiency all the way through to the end.

Most recently he has written four screenplays, directed shot and edited an award winning docu-series pilot, worked as Construction Foreman for Noah Baumbach’s upcoming Feature “White Noise”, Construction Foreman for David O’Russell’s upcoming feature “Amsterdam”, Art Director for Ryan Spindell’s “The Mortuary Collection”, and Construction Gangboss for seasons 1&2 of AppleTV+’s “For All Mankind”

True creatives flourish in high pressure environments.. you’ll be happy to throw him into the fire.
